Last Night Away

That was our last night away. We spent it on the edge of Worksop, in a hotel by the Chesterfield Canal. I walked along the canal yesterday evening, from one lock to the next, ending up in Rhodesia- a mining village named after the chairman of the local colliery- a Mr Rhodes- and not after the former colony of the same name, though surely with a whimsical nod in its direction. On the tow path I passed some bouquets of mummified flowers taped to a fence in tribute to a "lovely friend" who presumably died in the canal or perhaps in the scrappy woodland on the other side. This is Nottinghamshire- D.H. Lawrence's county- and Robin Hood's.

Worksop has a Priory church of some magnificence that I'd like to see but I won't be visiting it today because it's Good Friday and God knows what they might be getting up to inside.
