Bang, Bang

Two loud bangs- percussive- apparently very close to the house. I looked around and couldn't see a cause and assumed I was hearing Matthew throwing logs into the flat bed of his truck- but I wasn't convinced...

A little later I was taking things out to the garage and found that the fridge we keep out there was open and the floor covered in water and lumps of ice. A couple of 2 litre bottles of carbonated water had frozen solid and exploded.

Oh my, yes, that does make a mess. When I was a kid my brother stuck a can of pop into the big freezer in our back hall to chill it quickly on a hot day, and forgot it. It exploded, blasting the freezer door open and getting pop all over everything in the back hall (and in the freezer, too; we were opening pop-spattered packets of meat for months).

I hope your fridge door wasn't damaged by the explosions!

At least carbonated water isn't sticky.

I don't think the fridge was damaged, but there must be something basically wrong with it; it's supposed to keep things cool, not freeze them.

Good point. Sometimes fridges will overcool in hot weather; we used to have one that, if the outside temps rose much over 75, would overcompensate and freeze everything on the top shelf.
