Ailz is doing an on-line questionnaire.

"What do you mean when you use the word morals," she asks me.

Ach, I don't ever use the word morals. It has negative connotations.

I think- censorious old ladies in wool coats and silly hats.

I think- England in the 1950s.

I think- smog.

Does this mean I'm amoral?

No. It just means that you were obviously frightened by Miss Marple as a child.

The world was peopled by Miss Marple lookalikes when I was kid.

But actually, that Jane Marple, she's a bit of a dark horse. Looks like she's one of the fancy cake brigade, but deep down she's wiiiicked.

I always preferred 'ethical' as a term..

Yeah, "ethical" is a whole lot better.

Makes me think of beardy greek guys hanging out on the Acropolis.

:)

Anyone who can live with a cord-biting rabbit underfoot and still be kind isn't amoral.

Censorious--how many of those people I've known! I only hope I've never been one to someone else.

It's very comforting to be censorious.

But when Ailz threw the word "morals" at me I seriously went blank. It's a word that just isn't in my vocabulary.

Ethics is doing the right thing because you know you should.

Morals is doing the approved thing because you don't want to get caught doing something else. :)

I can accept someone who is amoral, but not someone who is unethical.

That's it. You've captured the distinction precisely.

Thank you.
