Indulging

So what's a "hall floor"?

Oh, I see, it's like a "ground floor" only sexier. In fact it's exactly like a ground floor.

I'm still indulging in property porn. As indulgences go it's pretty harmless. The worst it can do is give you eye-strain.

It suddenly strikes me that what I really want is the bungalow my grandparents had in the early sixties. Only not the house itself- which was sprawling but poky with low ceilings and a dark central corridor ("classic bungalow" says Ailz)- but its location- with a sea view and a back gate that opened straight onto the Downs.

I'm turning into my grandparents- help!

They ended up in a flat in a new-built tower in Hove. That was poky too. But I suppose flats generally are. What I'd really like is a flat in an early 19th century building with high ceilings and fireplaces that aren't ashamed of themselves. A bay window would be nice too. The problem with those old buildings is they have stairs not lifts- and we need a lift- which is why I'm being drawn to ones with street access on the ground floor.

Sorry, hall floor.

And then there's the Deco building in Eastbourne that used to be a grand hotel. It's so Poirot it's not true- with shared public spaces and lifts of course. Yes, yes, yes, but does it have a sea view? I know it doesn't back onto the Downs.

Ah well in my dreams it can, and it's only in my dreams that I'm going to be living there...

My love affair with Victorian is probably down to growing up in a succession of fifties/sixties council estate houses!
