Wildflower Meadow

I was going to broadcast wildflower seeds round the fields but now we have horses living in them anything that grows out there is going to get itself eaten or trampled so we're setting aside a corner of the garden as a wildflower meadow instead. Julia is preparing the ground now.



She says she can bring us a hawthorn to plant as a centrepiece.

Digging through the undergrowth she found a primula in flower...

Surprise flowers are wonderful. I think a wildflower garden is a wonderful idea. I understand that they take some maintenance in the first years as the opportunistic weeds colonize.

It just occurred to me this year that I could plant a number of lovely spring ephemerals in our back garden and enjoy them before the maple leafs out. I have several hundred decade-old columbine seeds that I may sow in a flat to see if anything comes up...

I threw some mixed wildflower seeds at an old bonfire site last year or the year before and these wonderful evening primroses came up.
