Poor naked wretches, whereso'er you are,
That bide the pelting of this pitiless storm,
How shall your houseless heads and unfed sides,
Your loop'd and window'd raggedness, defend you
From seasons such as these? O! I have ta'en
Too little care of this.

(Act III, scene iv)

just read an article that says the army corps of engineers has known for several years that the levee isn't strong enough to hold back a storm surge, but their funding has been cut by bush and they havent been able to do anything about it. in 2001 the federal emergency management agency listed a severe hurricane striking new orleans as one of the top three disaster scenarios likely to occur in the us (also on their list was a terrorist attack in nyc), but their research was ignored.

bush also opened up the wetlands between NO and the ocean to developers, putting the city at greater risk, because every 2 miles of wetlands reduces storm surge by half a foot.

I think I probably read the same article.

On Truthout, right?

They took a gamble. They hoped it wouldn't happen on their watch.

But it did.

i forget where exactly, but possibly salon.com or the ny times.

i was about to say "my, you're up early", but then i remembered that i'm on pacific time, so there's an 8 hour difference, not a 5 hour difference.

I'm up earlier than usual. Ailz has a hospital appointment mid-morning and we both need acres of time to get ready in.
