Brambles

Brambles are sneaky things. They send out runners through the long grass- where you barely notice them- and then- if you carry on not noticing them- you suddenly find that what you'd thought was rough meadowland is now a bramble thicket. Like all creepers they creep fast.

Since I realised they were trying to take over the upper field I've started carrying garden gloves and a pair of secaturs with me whenever I go for a wander.

I have been fighting a long-running battle with the bramble creepers. They sneak out through our rough "lawn" and trip you up if you're not careful. It's been a hard-fought stalemate for a while, but we're bringing in some mercenary troops (ie a tree surgeon) to get rid of a couple of big trees and a clump of self-seeded saplings and then I can really concentrate on pushing the brambles back and turning our garden into somewhere I can enjoy.

I suppose the birds must be to blame. They eat the blackberries and- er- leave the seeds lying around everywhere. Only this can explain why brambles are springing up in the middle of a field- many yards from the nearest hedge.
