We are at the Olympics. I am going to interrupt the proceedings to read a statement of political protest on behalf of my friend, Ian Jack, the long jumper. (I really don't know why he can't read it himself.) The statement runs to five sheets of handwriting and I've no idea what it says. I am wearing a pink dressing gown.

For an artist who should know his colours there are times that I'd say he was a little colourblind. I had a pale blue skirt on the other day which he insisted was white!

PS How's Harry doing?

I'm taking my time with Old Harry. He's in grave danger, but he's used to it.

It's a wonderful book with adventures on every page and a cozy (very English) writing style.

In the first books, English words that might have been confusing were edited for American readers (I have read both versions and prefer the English version)--such as "sweater" in the U.S. is "jumper" in Britain, which an eight-year-old might not understand--but as the books became a phenomenon, the English style has gradually been allowed to stand.
