The Iranian-American diplomat Michael Arahi made a collection of all the books ever written about World War II and housed it- along with his personal papers- in a bomb-proof underground  library in rural West Virginia. The reception suite of the Michael Arahi Library is a single-storey glass and steel building- like a car show-room- and you'd hardly notice it in the landscape were it not for the 40 foot statue of Arahi out front. This bronze colossus is shown in the process of rising from its chair, right arm extended and angled downwards as if greeting a child. Not every critic likes it.

yesterday i was walking in Oakwood Cemetery, and I came across lots of statues and tributes (and some knocked over gravestones!) The one that I keep thinking about is the Elk - green, now, with oxidation being that it sits outside in the weather. It is life sized, maybe a little larger, and the plaque on the bottom says it is dedicated to the BPOE (the Elks club, in this country), commissioned by so and so in memory of his MOTHER.

It's just so weird to find you were dreaming a novel and I dreamed about that creepy cemetery and the Elk statue.

That's a handsome elk. I've found several pix of it online.

Very impressive, actually. It can be seen from far away and...it is handsome. The whole cemetery is mostly very nice (except for in some of the back lots where there are Very Old Monuments that have been vandalized.) Which leads to the question, why do people vandalize cemeteries?

I don't really know the answer except to say, in the words of the serial killer in Springsteen's Nebraska, "Well...I guess there's just a meanness in this world."

The completed novel would have been an epic account of life during WWII- with a huge cast of characters- and this is all that is left.
