My mother had a nasty turn last week. I thought she was dying.

I found my mental processes slowing down, becoming very calm...

She's fine now- and will have forgotten the incident.

I'm thinking of it now as a rehearsal...

I had a very similar experience with my Aunt 95 who has a daily carer.

She is doing really well, but has suffered high blood pressure for a number of years.

She was just sitting down browsing her daily paper. All of a sudden she went grey and clammy.

Then just as quickly seemed to recover.

Luckily, her wonderful sensible carer sought professional medical NHS advice. The advice was to ring 999 immediately, even though the symptoms had now passed. They explained it sounded like a TIA. (mini stroke).

The advice was that even if the symptoms had disappeared an assessment in hospital should still be carried out.

A TIA is a warning that you are at risk of having a full stroke in the near future, and an assessment can help doctors to determine the best way to reduce the chances of this happening.

Also if you think you may have had a TIA previously, but the symptoms have since passed and you didn't seek medical advice at the time, you should make an urgent appointment with your GP so they can determine whether to refer you for a hospital assessment.

Although the symptoms of a TIA resolve in a few minutes or hours, they said that she would need treatment to help prevent another TIA or a full stroke happening in the future.
