Fading, Fading...

First thing this morning my mother found the plastic bag of advertising that came with yesterday's Telegraph- and went through it item by item.

"What's this?"

"Advertising"

"I don't know what this is."

"More advertising."

"What's this?"

"It's all advertising. Take my word for it."

"What's this?"

Well, you get the idea.

When she'd been through it all- and I'd removed the pile from sight so she didn't go throught it again- she gazed into her empty cereal bowl and asked, "What do I do now?"

Indeed. Roy's father was mostly a blank slate but a happy blank slate and that was relatively easy. His mother, on the other hand, didn't know who or where she was but knew something was very very wrong and cried most of the time.

Dealing with Roy's mother must have been truly awful.

Roy's parents lived in Florida and I rarely accompanied him down because of the expense. It was awful for him. Roy's father outlivedRoy's mother by a decade and was the principal caregiver until a nursing home was the only option. She lived a long time in a semi-vegatative state.
