Christmas descends. I felt it come down on us yesterday. Like a fall of invisible snow. There's a new quality to the silence. As if the world had caught its breath. As if TinyTim's muffler had been wrapped round ears and mouth. We have entered the zone of ever so slightly altered reality. It's a one way tunnel of a certain length with no side exits.

Have you ever noticed as well that while you can't necessarily understand the words in a crowd like that, the one word that does come through loud and clear is "fuck"?

Ray was saying last night how much he's looking forward to our move to Sweden, where late at night the only thing you can hear (at least where we're moving) will be the wind through the trees and an occasional moose call (hey, it's Ray ...!)

Yes, that word tends to get used a lot.

And it usually seemed things were reaching a point of crisis just as the revellers drew level with out house.
