Apparently so. Mayfield seems to have lost a number of its citizens to the Marian persecutions.
It's a small place now, but it used to have a Bishop's palace and be an important centre of the Wealdan iron industry.

And it's not too terribly far from Burwash. I think you did a photo essay of Burwash / Bateman's not too terribly long ago.

And, of course, Kipling talks about the Wealden iron industry in Puck of Pook's Hill and Rewards and Fairies.
I keep meaning to go back to Batemans. Maybe later this winter...
