The church towers round here are massive (built I suppose with a view to defending against French invaders) so they suit- and can support- a spire.

I understand that Mayfield's annual festival commemorates the burning of Protestants at the stake during the reign of Bad Queen Mary.

Apparently so. Mayfield seems to have lost a number of its citizens to the Marian persecutions.
It's a small place now, but it used to have a Bishop's palace and be an important centre of the Wealdan iron industry.

And, of course, Kipling talks about the Wealden iron industry in Puck of Pook's Hill and Rewards and Fairies.
I keep meaning to go back to Batemans. Maybe later this winter...
