Eastbourne Pier

It's only a couple of months since part of Eastbourne pier went up in smoke, but they've cracked on with the restoration work and the building is now open to visitors again. We thought the rain might defeat us, but it cleared towards late afternoon and we were able to walk out across the waves- as we'd planned- and take tea in the Victorian Tea Rooms.

Amazing how much they've managed to do in such a short time!

I just love that first shot with the rain shining on the planks, and the empty seats... It sort of sums up the English seaside experience.

When I was a kid my grandparents- who lived in Hove- used to give me a pocketful of coppers and turn me loose on the Brighton piers.

I've loved piers ever since.
