Yesterday I was mainly putting things in bags. There's a heap of bags that'll go back to Kent with us, a heap of bags full of things to take to the charity shop and a heap of bags full of rubbish.

We had lunch at the big Tesco's in Failsworth. I'm not doing any more cooking this week than I absolutely have to.

Do they do estate and moving sales over there?

I don't think they do. And the proof of this- or at least evidence in its favour- is that I'd never heard the term before.

Over here we have garage sales, moving sales and estate sales.

A garage sale happens when someone want to clean out the garage full of stuff they've accumulated. They set up tables in their garage or driveway and sell off things they don't use anymore or clothes they can't fit. In a large metropolitan area there might be 100 of these each weekend.

A moving sale is like a garage sale but bigger, with better stuff.

An estate sale happens when someone dies and the kids don't want the stuff left behind. These are held in the house, selling furniture, kitchen stuff, clothes, books, the things the people spent a lifetime collecting, all sold in situ. In a large metropolitan area there might be 10 of these each weekend.

There's also a living estate sale when the people aren't quite dead yet but are moving either to an assisted living facility, or in with one of the kids, or occasionally buying an RV to retire to Arizona as a camper.

Sales are typically on Fridays and Saturdays, and sometimes Sundays with prices getting cheaper each day.

You can see what's happening in our neighborhood here -

We cleared about $5000 when we had a living estate sale for our mom. And still had three truckloads of stuff to donate to a charity store.
