Romsey

Yesterday morning we were in Romsey. It has another great Romanesque church, This one used to belong to an order of nuns.  People say you can't build high using the rounded arch; what nonsense!

Meet the Barbes. They're lifesize and slightly disconcerting...

We had morning tea- and ice cream in King John's house. It isn't really King John's house- as it dates from something like 40 years after his reign.

We had thought of going on to Winchester in he afternoon- more churches, more monuments- but we were wilting- so we ate a pic-nic lunch in the New Forest and then went back to the hotel to watch Serena Williams get bumped out of Wimbledon by Alize Cornet.

And today we return to Kent....

I was in Romsey yesterday! (Though I spent more of the day in Portsmouth.) It's my home town.

When I was young, it was King John's Hunting Lodge. Then King John's House. Now - an old house, I suppose. Did you look at the medieval grafitti upstairs?

To take that picture of the Barbes you must have been standing on top of Lord Mountbatten!

So we might have run into one another!

I didn't see the graffiti.

To be honest I didn't give Mountbatten much thought. I saw he was there and then promptly forgot about him.

Those arches are splendid. As for the Barbes, they look like someone you half recognise: she - Grissell? - in particular, who does she remind me of? It's on the tip of my tongue.

Give Mr Barbe a haircut and he'd look rather like Steve Coogan.
