Never Let Me Go: Kazuo Ishiguro

I wasn't sure about this book. I'd read reviews and knew what the big reveal was and didn't think I was going to be convinced by it. But I was. It's a book about denial, about horrors being glossed over- and the narrator's voice- flat, colourless, without affect- is a tour de force of subtlety and restraint.

I think what really hit me square on about this book is that I'd never read sci-fi that was not about fighting or overthrowing the system - but about discovery of its workings and acquiescence. Heartbreaking.

The truth is most people do acquiesce in injustice when it's backed by the system. And that includes most of its victims. I kept asking myself why none of the donors ran away or fought back- but in my heart of hearts I knew.
