I had finished cutting the hedge and was struggling to get my gear back in off the street when a passing random bloke in a baseball cap paused to open the gate for me. I think- from his appearance and his not seeming to have any English- that he was one of those Romanians Nigel Farage is so angry about.

Don't think we've any Romanian neighbours, but we've several Polish ones and few from elsewhere. Many English folks round here are always complaining about it, but as 'these foreigners' have never given me any bother and have often been quite considerate I always respond by listing all the horrendous English neighbours I've had.

I think when it comes to the 'other' people tend to only see what confirms their prejudice.

Our street has a few very long established Eastern Europeans- people who came over after the war. There are fewer whites than there were (though one of the houses is the vicarage.) Most of our nearest neighbours are Pakistani. And then, this past year, there's been an influx of Romanians.

Out of my 30 teammates, two are Romanian, and two are Italian. So what if they speak Latin, as long as they do their jobs.
