I don't like pound stores. There's a kind of metaphysical griminess about them  They make you feel poverty-stricken even if you're not.  The lighting is dim, the aisles are oppressive, the music is intrusive.

But...

Yesterday we bought two alarm clocks (two alarm clocks!) for 99p.

They depress me as well. The staff always seem overly cheerful, and the shops never seem to be very clean or well cared for.

I suppose it costs to make a store attractive.

We have dollar stores here. A sign in a local one says, "Due to increased transportation costs everything is now $1.09. And yes, it causes quite a bit of existential angst among their customers.

$1.09 is a silly price.

In Canada, we have stores where everything is a loonie or a toonie (plus tax). They are all amazingly clean, well-organized, and well-lit. I'm not sure why there is such a difference.

Perhaps I'm overstating the negative. Ailz likes these places well enough. My instinct is to grab what I want and head for the cashier.

Are there truly enough appointments for two alarm clocks?

We have one each. I like to have a bedside clock I can blink at blearily in the early morning.

I assume pound stores are like dollar stores. We have several chains here -- Family Dollar and Dollar General are the most pervasive. Family Dollar is always fun in a weird kind of a way, possibly because all the staff I've seen always seem to be cheerful and pleasant. Dollar General is more oppressive.

Yes, they're the same thing. Everything in store retails at a single price. You have to be careful. Some of the bargains aren't bargains at all. Others are.
