The BBC is replaying a series about Thatcher's years in power.  My mother had it on.  It features interviews with the great lady herself recorded shortly after her fall. That imperious voice, fuzzy with indignation and self-pity, drove me from the room.

The police are investigating new claims that it was the SAS wot did for Lady Di. At the risk of being labelled a loon, I must say I've always thought her death- coming  at a time when she was threatening the Royal Family with Muslim step-relatives- was awfully convenient.

I've sat through hours of nit-picking analysis and I'd say there were a lot of things that haven't been adequately explained...

Honestly I've always suspected she was bumped off. Notice that Fayed, an extremely successful entrepreneur, who suddenly and inexplicably became rich, has never been granted British citizenship - he's obviously well dodgy. Diana getting mixed up with that lot was more than somebody in authority could take. and if Charles hinted that he would like to be rid of his troublesome ex - that would not surprise me either.

Diana wrote a letter shortly before she died saying that her husband was planning an accident to her car. If you bring it up you're likely to be called a conspiracy theorist. People in the establishment- and that includes a lot of journalists- are remarkably touchy about this issue.

I don't find it hard to imagine Charles or someone else having a Henry II moment. The Royals are ruthless. There's plenty of evidence for that. I suspect there's little they wouldn't do to protect "the firm".

I'm afraid that my vote is for paparazzi with flashing cameras distracting the driver. That's what applying Occam's razor would suggest.

I never buy the tabloids, but I see the headlines every time I go in the Co-op and the weeks before had featured Diana on the front page nearly every day. When I heard about her death, and about how they'd used a decoy to lure the press away, my first thought was, "Now they've killed the goose that lays the golden egg." Of course I hadn't reckoned on how many front pages they would still fill with Diana stories and conspiracy theory stories. In fact the tabloids might have made more out of her dead than alive. Would she still have maintained her charm if she'd aged and gone through messy relationship after relationship?

I'm not sure I'm such a great fan of Occam's razor. Human affairs are messy and complicated. The simplest explanation isn't always the true one.

If Diana had lived she would have become a huge embarrassment to the British establishment- much as Princess Margaret was- only more so.

No, I never did. But it's a great title. I wonder if he made it up himself or stole it.
