My mother was reluctant to go to the village butcher's because there was an "incident" there recently which caused two long-term employees to resign and several long-term customers to boycott the business. We don't know what the incident was but our neighbour Mary says the butcher's wife is "a cow". Ailz and I went anyway.

You don't have to deal with issues like this when you shop at Tesco's.

The summer after G and I got married, we wardened a tiny YHA hostel in a tiny village in Yorkshire. After that experience, we swore we would never ever live in a tiny place again. It was like something out of a sitcom. Half the village were feuding with the other half and the chap who ran the village shop and post office (they still had them in those days!) was trying to keep on good terms with everyone.

I don't think I'd want to live in the country, or, at least, not long-term.

And don't forget she makes all the pies - like the ones you bought today.

It's a lovely shop and reasonably priced - for a village - especially one with not many pavements

I miss Oldham, though it is nice not to draw the bedroom curtains 'cos there's no-one else in seeing range - except Ma.

The pies look excellent, but we've yet to put them to the test.

Imagine living in a French village.. Valognes was a seething hotbed of locals hostilities. BUt there were two of every shop, one for collaborateurs and their descendents, and one for the rest.

My knowledge of French village life is mostly from the movies- which make it seem hellish.

small towns are small towns all over the world, and unless you were born there you never really understand...OR belong.
