Child Rape

We are a society in which the rape of children is common. And in which child rapists in positions of prominence and authority- in schools, churches, social services departments, the judicial system, the entertainment industry, politics up to the level of national government- have been winked at and protected.

We're finally beginning to wake up to the extent of our shame.

This morning they arrested Bill Roache on suspicion of raping a 15 year old.

We've also had a seismic shift in what we regard as children. If you look at the news coverage in the eighties of Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith it beggars belief that he was treated with a mixture of admiration and contempt, and not pilloried as a criminal, as he would be now.

I understand he went to the police after the Savile affair broke and asked if they wanted to interview him and they said, "Don't worry, mate."

I remember a joke on an 80s sitcom about Wyman - the punchline was "the Stones need to tour, how else is Bill Wyman going to pay his new wife's school fees." You couldn't even think of putting that in a script now.

It seemed odd at the time that his marriage was getting nodded through. Now it seems unbelievable.
