He went up on deck and looked right- and there were ships as far as the eye could see. Then he looked left- and there were ships as far as the eye could see. It was the morning of Tuesday, June 6, 1944 and his ship- full of US troops- was heading towards Omaha Beach....

We won't see that sort of epic again, hopefully. It's amazing to me to place the scale of WWII in the 1940's.

My late FiL was there on D+3 but he'd also been on the Somme, Passendal and at St Valery (the Scottish Dunkirk) and was still there when they broke down the gates of the Kz at Belsen. He was a pre WW1 regular and an Old Contemptible but the last was the only one he'd not talk about..........
