Parking in a disabled space when your'e not disabled is a naff thing to do. The Chancellor's excuse is he didn't realize he was doing it. Disabled spaces aren't actually that hard to spot. You know- big white or yellow symbol painted on the tarmac ahead of you- you'd have to be pretty abstracted not to see it.  It makes me wonder how many other things he remains unaware of as he sails grandly through life.

Yes, it's a bit like sitting in the first class carriage, forgetting that you only have a second-class ticket - to pluck an example from thin air...

Exactly. We are governed by people who don't believe the usual rules apply to them- and in a way they don't; there's little they can't fix by by waving their credit cards around.

Or to blithely state that you can live on £53 a week when you are privileged.

I don't know the details of IDS's back story but I understand he married into money- and lives in a Tudor house with three acres of garden, plus a swimming pool and tennis court. Really, he hasn't a clue.

Apparently he is a Yonsei: that is, of Japanese descent three generations back. That would make him one-eighth Japanese. /irrelevant factoid of the day.

I think he's one of the more interesting people in this government. An odd cove- and under the placid gentlemanly exterior- a bit of a chancer.

If he really wasn't aware of what he was doing, perhaps the police would like to book him for driving without due care and attention?

What he should have said was, "Oh, I didn't think rules applied to me, only to you little people." It would have been more honest.

I'd have thought he was liable to a fine. The problem is money means nothing to him.

Parking in a disabled space without having the permit to do so is one of my biggest pet peeves no matter who does it. My mother was in a wheel chair for almost 20 years and taking her anywhere was difficult but even moreso when the spaces were occupied by people who weren't supposed to use them. The Chancellor is oblivious to anybody else's needs and that is not a very good trait for a Chancellor.

It's something that makes Ailz furious.

I was thinking of Ailz, too.

The elites do tend to get away with things (just look at Tony Blair) so it's graitfying when one of them gets his or her comeuppance- Chris Huhne for example.

I've had power- not very much- but enough to manipulate events on a local level. I didn't like what it did to me.

Or how much I enjoyed it.
