I know you got flustered (not something a political leader should allow to happen) but that outburst of yours was ugly. Your totalitarian instincts were showing. So you believe the only people who should be allowed to investigate the Rennard cock-up is some bunch of insiders you've appointed yourself? Ever hear of a Free Press?

On a lighter note let me run some names past you- Sherlock Holmes, Lord Peter Wimsey, Miss Marple, the Famous Five- Any of these ring any bells? Or again,  how about Bernstein and Woodward? In our shared culture (at least I thought we shared it- you're a liberal, aren't you?)- the "self-appointed detectives" are the good guys.

The party tried to brush the Rennard affair under the carpet. In the end Clegg seems to have acted decisively. He got his deputy to give Rennard a good talking to. Shortly afterwards Rennard resigned.

Thus far it's embarrassing for the party but Clegg comes out of it reasonably well. What comes next has been a master-class in political ineptitude. The admission that he knew about Rennard has had to be dragged out of Clegg and he's kept changing his story. I don't understand it. The story could have been spun to his advantage- "Yes I knew about it and I moved to sack the bastard." Instead he's allowed himself to appear evasive, petulant and generally useless. It's very odd.
