The Project

I log our travels in an falling-to-pieces road atlas of the British isles. Any place we've been and I've taken photographs (that last bit is important) gets a circle drawn round it. Some pages are covered in circles, others empty. Before this last trip page 27 (East Yorkshire) was very sparcely marked up; now a host of fairy rings has sprouted overnight.

The project is to get every page covered in rings. Some pages give satisfaction. Others irk. Pages 10 and 11 (Hampshire and West Sussex) are a particular source of grief. All those square miles of rolling downland and I've only got one place circled. (Netley Abbey as it happens.) Something needs to be done.

As a Hampshirite by birth and training, I agree! Interesting fact (to me): the setting of my Death of a Ghost is based on Netley Abbey.

To be fair, there's also quite a bit of Mottisfont Abbey (upstream on the Test) and Portchester Castle (a few miles along the coast) in the mix. But that setting on the Solent, just opposite Fawley, is important.

I once spent a night sleping rough on the banks of the Solent near Netley. I remember it rained and I woke to find my feet in a puddle. Decades later my nephew arranged to hold his wedding reception in almost exactly the same spot.

I've got a lot of places ringed in West Kent, not so many in the East- which is ridiculous seeing how well I know it.

I used to live in Sussex and I love Mickleham Priory, Standen, Cissbury and Chanctonbury rings, and Brighton Pavilion. And I've always wanted to go to Charleston farmhouse.

I was at school in Sussex and my grandparents used to live in Hove so I know parts of the county really well. It's just that i haven't been back recently.
