Not Exactly Value For Money

Dot got a call saying she was paying too much Council Tax and someone would come round and help her sort it out.

Ailz and I didn't like the sound of this at all. We did some research. The outfit who made the call are called Dalton and Dalton. They have a website. If they manage to get you a rebate on your Council Tax they claim 25% of it.

Thing is, anyone can ask for a review of their Council Tax banding. All you have to do is ring up the Council's Valuation Office and the Valuation Office does the rest. Dalton and Dalton may be operating within the Law but what they're doing, when you boil it down, is charging 25% of what could turn out to be a fairly large sum for making a single phone call.

We started getting a ton of Senior Scams when Roy turned 70. I can hardly wait for next year, when he turns 75.

There are a lot of wolves out there.

We are continually getting calls from ambulance chasers. It's usually the same companies time after time. They want us to sue people for accidents we haven't had or claim for mis-sold insurance we never took out. It's tiresome, but I'm coming to regard it as one of the conditions of life in the 21st century.

I detest schemes that take advantage of those who don't understand or don't know, especially of the elderly.

Yes, it's despicable. I long ago decided- as a golden rule- that I'd never buy anything from a cold-caller.

That's an excellent rule.

When con people use two names that are the same they seem to think that people will think they are more trustworthy, don't you think?

Yes. Dalton and Dalton sounds like an old established firm of family solicitors- eminently trustworthy.
