Romanesque Tympanum- Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire

tympanum, stoney stanton

St Michael's,Stoney Stanton has been rebuilt and restored, but this Romanesque tympanum was retained and placed above what I take to be a vestry door. One source identifies the subject as St Wilfred, accompanied by the lion of the gospel, subduing the wild beasts of paganism.

Oh my! That's a wonderful bit of Romanesque!

And a big surprise- attached as it is to a church that doesn't have any other Romanesque features (at least on the outside).

Isn't it gorgeous? Glad they retained it.

I love coming across unexpected and uncelebrated treasures in otherwise run-of-the-mill churches.
