The Morning Of The Funeral

We went to view the body yesterday. Not a good idea. It didn't look bad, just wrong. 

Joe writes to say he can't get anyone to cover for him today. I'm sorry. I was really looking forward to seeing him.

There's been a couple of times I've been invited to view the bodies of those I've known and loved ("It'll be your last chance to see them"). It's never been a good idea. It's just a husk, not the person I knew at all.

I hope the funeral goes well, or as well as these things ever can.

Exactly. You're not seeing the person, just some embalmer's idea of what they might once have looked like.

"It didn't look bad, just wrong." You put that perfectly. It always looks wrong, even when they "look good". If I were to be viewed (I wont) I would want my hair left straight, no color lipstick, my eyeglasses on my face, and I would like to be wearing my signature jeans and turtle neck - and of course my simple pierced earrings. In other words, to look as real as possible under the circumstances. I am keeping you all in my thoughts during this process. I hope it all goes well.
