Bright Eyes....

Tosh was our first rabbit. We got him- nearly seven years ago- to divert Joe from indulging himself in a snake. Tosh and Joe used to wind one another up. Joe would thump at Tosh in the manner of an aggressive male rabbit and Tosh would get his own back by hiding under Joe's bed and dashing out to attack his naked feet. Then Joe left and Tosh became all ours. He was the friendliest rabbit we've ever had. He outlived several lady companions. Over the last year his companion has been Trigonometry (the least friendly rabbit we've ever had) who was sold to us as a lady but turned out not to be. Tosh bullied him. Their relationship was punctuated by terrible scraps which Tosh mostly won.

Tosh died last night. Goodbye, little fella.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I feel like I knew him through your updates and pictures, and had grown quite fond of him myself as a result. I'm sure you will miss him - and I'm well aware that the timing must feel pretty rough given what is happening with Ailz's father as well. I know Tosh had a great life with you, though, and I hope you'll feel able to do the same for another rabbit soon.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

We still have two rabbits. They're brothers and hate one another. Tolkien lives in the yard and is bold and comparatively friendly. Trig (who was Tosh's companion) lives in an upstairs bedroom, has never bonded with us and is a complete coward.

It would be nice if we could get them to live together in the yard, but I don't think that will work...

Golly, I remember when you got Tosh. I always enjoyed hearing about him - a larger-than-life bunny. RIP.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it doesn't seem that long since he was a baby.

Thanks.

I'm really sorry to read this, Tony. It doesn't matter what sort of furry companion we have. When they go we miss them. 7 is a ripe old age for a house bunny. But still...I'm sorry.

Is there any way you could divide your yard to have two bunny habitats?

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

Dividing the yard would be possible. Another possibility is that we re-home Trig.

[identity profile] lblanchard.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's sad that they run on different life clocks than we do.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed.

But he's had seven years. In the wild he'd have been lucky to have lasted one.

Also, I reckonthey live almost entirely in the present. Time has no meaning for them.

I'm so sorry. I hope you can re-home Trig.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. We'll see how it goes. We may try and persuade Trig to live in peace and harmony with his brother, but that will involve a bigger input of time and energy than we can spare right now.

Goodbye, Tosh. I am glad you were part of a family, and my condolences to them on your loss.

RIP, Tosh. And I hope something works out with the other two. We have two female angora rabbits in the house right now (in addition to our whole colony of other rabbits in the barn)... We got the second one to be a companion for the first, but so far they end up fighting if they are put together -- unless it's in the back of the car, going for a ride. (In that case they snuggle together for comfort and protection.)

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
People say rabbits are sociable animals, but I've not seen it. Put two of the same gender together and they'll fight for dominance. Tolkien- who lives on his own in the backyard- seems perfectly happy with his own company.

[identity profile] zoe-1418.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, though, rabbits ARE innately social -- our colony rabbits, a couple dozen living together in a small barn with an outside run (and most of them are related), LOVE to hang out together, pile up in clumps, etc., even though sometimes they have to establish dominance even with their best friends. If they start out together, especially, say, two female littermates, they really bond. It's harder to get two grown rabbits to like each other -- or to introduce a new rabbit into an established household where there's already a rabbit. I'll bet we would have a bit of trouble introducing either of our angoras to the barn colony. Rabbits are definitely territorial (and females can be worse than males sometimes)... but if it's done just right and with enough space, it can work. -- We may have to create a very large outdoor enclosure, with plenty of hidey-holes, for our two girls who currently fight. On a car ride, they come together in shared adversity/fear, but when we tried it, we followed up by putting them together in a smallish enclosure in our yard. It didn't work well.

[identity profile] zoe-1418.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, if you put two of different genders together, you'll soon have population explosion. ;-) (We breed rabbits, so I know!)

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Our two brothers were fine together until they matured- then they started tearing strips off each other. Literally: Poor old Trig lost half an ear.

Sorry to hear about Tosh. He had a good life. Maybe one less rabbit in the house will change Trig for the better.

7 years is a long time to live with someone - human or otherwise - and to loose a companion is always sad. Still, 7 years is a good run for a rabbit, and he had a good life - and seems to have added to your life along the way! Job well done, little fella...

[identity profile] endlessrarities.livejournal.com 2012-05-24 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good age for a rabbit, isn't it?

And a rabbit called Trigonometry. Wow. That's some name for a rabbit.
