I was talking to Mike just now. Mike is 31 and pretty well up on cultural shit and he'd never even heard of Ken Russell.
Russell was a catholic. Roman Catholicism- with its kinks and kitsch and intimations of immortality- has been a great gift to the movies. Think of all the great film makers who have been Catholics, practising or lapsed: Hitchcock, Ford, Bunuel, Fellini, Scorsese, Coppola (pere et fille): the list goes on and on.
