According to the BBC today's the 75th anniversary of the first television broadcast.

They didn't know what to call the new technology. One suggestion was "Pictures by Wireless".

Last night I watched a repeat  of the utterly delightful The Road to Coronation Street.  Tempestuous soap star Jessie Wallace is fabulous as tempestuous soap star Pat Phoenix. The director is TV titan Charles Sturridge who made Brideshead Revisited.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Pictures by Wireless.
Happy birthday to you.

"Pictures by Wireless"? That's funny! If the name has stuck, we'd now call it PW instead of TV!

I wish it had stuck.

I like that name. I also love BBC productions that find their way over here via Public Broadcasting. It stymies me why the American broadcasting networks cannot come up with comparable quality.

According to a programme I heard today, "viewers" were originally known as "lookers in".

"Lookers in" suggests Alice at the garden door. It's somehow much more evocative than "listeners in."

Nine

It looks different from over here. British programme makers worship at the altar of HBO- and are continually trying to come up with something "as good as The Wire".

The truth is both countries produce a certain amount of good TV- and lots and lots of rubbish. You only get to see our best stuff and we only get to see yours.
