That is an impressive patina. Is it green like that on the tree trunks as well or is it some trick of the light?

No, that green is natural. It'll be some sort of mould or lichen.

Random. My family comes from down south. I don't have any roots (that I know of) in the north of England.

Gosh -- I didn't think of Derbyshire as the North. But, then, my folks come from a little hamlet near Whitby. (EDIT: That would be my English folks on my father's side, as opposed to my French, German, Swiss, and Alsatian folks on both sides.)
