After Penn And Teller

Penn and Teller have completed their run and their place has been taken by one of those programmes in which comedians talk about how funny other comedians are-  especially the dead ones. In an early sequence Ronnie Corbett was eating lunch with Miranda Hart and having a conversation that went something like this.

"But Morecambe and Wise were so funny weren't they?"

"I know I know- and did you notice how funny they were?"

"I know I know."

Then Ronnie took Miranda on a backstage tour of a theatre in Croydon- "the hallowed ground"- where Morecambe and Wise had once played a gig in the 70s.

Penn and Teller sound so much more interesting.

They were.

I hate that kind of circle jerking. And I never thought any of the comedians of that style and generation were particularly funny. Probably because I hate humour based on farce. The exception being Frank Spencer, occasionally. (I can't remember his real name.)

Michael Crawford- later (implausibly) the phantom of the opera.

I think those old comics are best remembered at arm's length. Whenever I go back and revisit the shows I'm disappointed. I watched the better part of a Morecambe and Wise Christmas special recently and it was terrible.

Unrelated to this post, I'm sorry—I tried e-mailing you at the last address I had for you, which is from a couple of years ago. It didn't bounce as far as I can tell, but did it get through?
