At Keith And Ruth's

We were at Keith and Ruth's yesterday afternoon. I spent a  lot of time watching the oogly-booglies in the aquarium. They have a conch that wears its stomach on the outside and a sea hare that looks like a slug pretending to be a coral.

Ailz was back there today for a girly lunch. We're rarely apart these days and it felt odd being in the house alone- as if I only fully exist when she's observing me.

For me, it's as if I only exist when I have someone to narrate my life to.

I know what you mean, in short.

Our personalities are flimsy things- in need of constant affirmation.

I am seldom alone in the house, while C is on summer break, then when school takes up again I spend most every weekday here by myself. I can actually feel myself fading away, like some long-forgotten ghost.

It makes you wonder about people who spend really long times on their own- hermits, prisoners in solitary, marooned sailors...

I spend long times on my own, sometimes for days on end. But there are always other people around if I choose to leave my apartment and go see them. I used to be always surrounded by people, but now in my old age I enjoy my own company - at last!

It does make you wonder. A friend has a Chinese seal that reads, "Having no visitors is like living deep in the mountains". I think of that so often, when staring out at the world.

Should you ever take an interest in hermits and such, have a look at Bill Porter's, Road to Heaven: Encounters with Chinese Hermits. Highly recommended.
