It's not only Miliband who deals with difficult questions by repeating the same memorised text over and over again. I googled " Miliband loop" and almost immediately lighted on a clip of George Osbourne doing exactly the same thing.   The journalists could stop the politicians using this dodge by broadcasting the interviews in full, but they don't because- well- I suppose they all went to their same schools or eat in the same restaurants or something. The journalist who outed Miliband says he did it because he felt ashamed to be part of the process. As well he might.

OMG, what a farce that interview is. I found a link which is on the BBC website. As the commentators say, he is robotic and does not answer the individual questions, but just keeps repeating the same phrases. Can you post the link to Osbourne doing the same please?

The link is here- http://www.neilmilton.co.uk/blog/?p=45

It doesn't load very well- and I only watched enough of it to get the general idea. I'll say this for Osbourne, he's a better actor than Miliband.

Meh.

It was only bad from a journalistic standpoint and thus the journalist's reaction. If he failed, professionally, to force a political bobblehead beyond his pre-programmed talking points, or to even call the man on his formulaic answers, it must surely suck to be him. He should have been embarrassed.

On the other hand, from a purely political standpoint, Miliband had something he wanted to say and he said it, leaving absolutely no room whatsoever for a partisan press to lift out and endlessly repeat the bit that happens to serve their agenda.

The journalist who recorded the interview doesn't normally deal with politicians- which is why it struck him as so weird.

Yes, I can see that. He must not have seen, "Yes, Minister", either, or clearly understood what it is that journalists are supposed to do.

Steve Benen, whose political analysis I trust and enjoy, was actually somewhat impressed by Miliband's performance.
