Toning Things Down

I've started painting the kitchen. It has been orange and lemon yellow. It will be magnolia. My advisers tell me the old colours clash with the new red and black kitchen units. I don't think  Raoul Dufy would have agreed.

I do dislike going up ladders.

Going up ladders does not bother me. I do hate painting ceilings, though, even more than painting generally. Usually, when pressed, I volunteer to do all of the masking and cutting in, leaving the painting proper to another hand.

I agree about ceilings.

A loft ladder tore loose from its moorings while I was halfway up it a few years back and I've been nervous ever since.

How frightening.

Actually, I was more-or-less afraid of ladders until one slid out from under me, when I was quite young, and left me dangling from the gutter of the house in which I grew up. Paradoxically, after hauling myself onto the roof without falling, I haven't really been afraid since.

I don't mind ladders if they're stable ones. What colour is magnolia? A kind of pink?

You see I don't believe any ladder is really stable.

Magnolia is off-white or cream.
