Who would actually want to live under the Caliphate?
Only the sort of immature young man who needs daddy to regulate his sexual urges for him- only the odd saint.
(Though the true saint would be content to live under any regime- and wouldn't force his political preferences on others)
Oh, and of course the busybodying types who would end up running the show.

Most people would find it irksome. Puritanism goes against the nature of the human beast.. People like a song and a dance.
If Bin Laden was a popular hero for a time it was because he had given the West a smack, not because the people in the street wanted to follow him back into the 7th century.

However, I fear the truth of it is that the man was popular for the same reasons Hitler was popular with the German people after the Great War; because they were (and are) desperately unhappy, and he made a good case for pointing them at a big enemy they could blame for it. And then he put the tools of war into their hands, and told them they had nothing worth living for that was worth more than the chance to be a hero (again, strikingly similar to certain Big Lies we've heard from all nations at one time or another,) and he pointed them at the Sleeping Dragon and lit their fuses.
And now the Sleeping Dragon (which has only really woken up from its dreams of Bread and Circuses a couple of times in all its history, and one of those was to try and chew its own legs off,) has given the angry and disenfranchised of those countries another martyr to 'avenge'.
I hope one day that governments actually begin to CARE about where terrorism really comes from, and that it's hunger and desperation that makes it work. Maybe then we'll actually start winning the war against it -- by feeding it into complacency, and empowering its footsoldiers to make different, BETTER choices!

What I reckon may have run its course is the ideology Bin Laden embraced. The revolutions of the Arab Spring suggest the Islamic nations want democracy, not a Caliphate.
