After The Revolution

The French got the Terror- and then they got Napoleon followed by a century of revolutions and restorations. The Russians got Bolshevism followed by whatever it is they've got now. The Iranians got theocracy followed by- well- it's too early to tell.

And the Egyptians?

I would love to be optimistic -- all those intelligent, earnest young faces -- but I also know history. Sigh.

I wouldn't want to hazard any predictions.

It will be either a real democracy or a bloodbath. I am having great faith that it will be the former.

Since this overthrow wasn't completely dependent on a specific ideology --- except perhaps for "throw the bastards out!" --- I have some hopes that it won't be replaced by something as dire as in France or Russia. We'll see...

Leaders will emerge, I suppose- they usually do.

I'm feeling skeptical about the outcome. I am always suspicious when an outgoing regime is replaced by the military...

It seems the military are the only people in a position to take over. There is no organised opposition. A democratic system- with parties etc- will have to be built from the ground up.
