The Dunkirk Memorial

On our way back down the coast to catch the ferry home, we stopped briefly at Dunkerque and I got to walk on the beach. The war on the western front should have ended here, in 1940, with the allies soundly thrashed and suing for peace. That's the sort of thing that happens in real life. In real life there are no second chances. Only apparently there are.

My God! Can you imagine what would have happened if the Allies had given up then and there? It makes me shudder profoundly just to think about it.
