Autumnal

Yesterday I hung clothes out on the line- and by evening they were very nearly dry. I doubt if that will happen again this year. When we drive out I notice brown and yellow patches among the trees. Yesterday evening I went upstairs and fetched myself a body warmer for the first time in months; I'm wearing it again today.

Yes, Tony, it's here too. I hate to see the end of summer and the coming of winter. I had the electric heater on last night. Tomorrow the building management will be turning on the central heat.
To me September is a depressing time. October's beautiful weather and lovely colors makes it all better.

When I was a kid we always used to go on holiday in early September, so it's a month I'm fond of- even though you can feel the warmth of summer draining away.

For me it's the autumn hikes in the October woods. There are of course the brilliant colors overhead and the crunch of dead leaves underfoot, while the gloriously warm day is made even more pleasant by the absence of bugs. By that time we have had the first frost and the bugs have gone to their winter rest or refuge. The nights will be crisp and cool but the heat in the house will be a comfort and there will be popcorn and apples and hot mulled cider as well.
