A Phantom Cuckoo

There was a cuckoo in my dream. It had let itself into the back bedroom- and was sitting on a mantlepiece that doesn't exist and its plumage was greeny-blue. Then I woke up, but the chant went on: cuck-cu-coo, cuck-cu-coo. I got up, drew aside the blinds and a couple of doves who had been having a conversation in the gutter above the bedroom window took off and made themselves scarce.

A perfect dream combo of the robin that got into your house yesterday and the noises outside your window while you were dreaming. LOLOLOL

Exactly.

Cuckoos were on the sountrack to my Surrey childhood. You never hear them this far north- and I miss them.

I haven't heard a cuckoo for years. As a child in Cornwall I can remember hearing them every spring. I loved that sound, and miss it too.

They were always rare.

It's a strange sound- haunting and sad in a way no other birdsong is.

Absolutely. :-)

Although I have never heard a cuckoo, I have had experience with mourning doves. The first time I heard one I though it was an owl who was awake in the daytime. A neighbor informed me of what - and where - it was. I grew to enjoy them very much.
Interesting that the doves insinuated themselves into your dream...

I haven't heard a cuckoo in ever such a long time. They never trespass this far north.
