Notes On Roland Garros

1.They don't pack the courts at Roland Garros- not like they do at Wimbledon- where the ticket queues stretch out onto the street and round the corner and the overspill sits on Henman Hill and watches centre court action on the big screen. Henin v Sharapova was a great match, featuring popular players, but there were plenty of free seats in the house.

2. I want to see Henin win the tournament. I like her. I like how intense she is.

3. Venus went out this morning. I'm sorry. But at least it means there won't be another undercooked Williams on Williams final

4. Murray's another one who's intense. The French crowd seem to love him. Maybe it's all the existential suffering he seems to do.  Maybe it's got something to do with the auld alliance.

5. Among the corporate logos that cover the courts the only one I didn't recognise was Afflelou- so I looked it up. Alain Afflelou has a chain of shops selling eyewear. Or he did. His company, which only trades in France and Spain, is now owned by a UK investment firm.

6. British Eurosport, catering as it does for a clientele that knows there's a world beyond these shores, carries lots of travel ads. I like the one that goes (in a breathy, girly voice)

We are Turkish airlines;
We are globally yours.

It reminds me of the jingle for the dairy product (I forget which one it was) that went

We are happy cows;
We eat the grass and browse.

I used to sing it to the cats (when we had them) only my version went

We are happy cats
We eat mice and bats.

Yeah. Murray is a wee bit over the top with his existential angst...

Yeah. Murray is a wee bit over the top with his existential angst...

Eurosport ads are rather strange and esoteric.

'Hyundai. Where reality exceeds expectations'. And: 'Eutalsat. La Platforma digitalla' de something.

And so on...

Sorry. Had a bit of a crisis with the reply submission doo-dah.

Normal service will be resumed in due course...

No worries :)

Eurosport is a new world to me. I don't watch much sport- just tennis and test cricket.

Cycling's my thing, though I sometimes watch equestrianism if it happens to be on.

I'm not a big fan of sport on Eurosport. I'd much rather see something which has been nicely edited than something which is on live.

Much though I love cycling, watching a live cycle race can be slightly reminiscent of watching paint dry...

I know what you mean- a three hour tennis match can be hard going too- but you just don't get the same excitement with edited highlights.

It was Anchor, green green grass, butt-er!

Your cat version made me smile.

Of course!

I knew my rendering of the second line was a bit wonky.

It's probably only a matter of time before they cross the Channel.
