St. John The Baptist, Glastonbury

Glastonbury's parish church gets overlooked, but it's a lovely building- and the 15th century tower- the second tallest is Somerset- is quite maginificent.

From the Abbey grounds

Same again

Is this St. Joseph of Arimathea carrying the holy grail?

Yes, I think it is.

Another nice church!

You're a church-hound. You sniff them out at a hundred paces!!

Saw a lovely one in Wells but I can't remember its name. Had a gorgeous coffered ceiling...

They have to be old. Victorian churches (with odd exceptions) leave me cold.

I know the church you mean- at least I think I do. I've probably got a picture of it somewhere.

Yep. The Victoria pseudo-gothic imitations just don't match the real thing, do they??

There's one or two nice Classical ones in Glasgow and a nice imitation Byzantine one, too... 'Greek' Thomson ones are quite nice, too...

But I much prefer the medieval ones...

Victorian Gothic always feels insincere to me. I've less resistance to their efforts in other styles.

It really is a magnificent tower.
I love the photo with the man on the ladder. Nice touch!

Thanks.

Yes, that picture would be nothing much without the guy on the ladder.
