Cyclical

Religion is like sex; When amateurs do it it looks silly.

Which is why we have priests and pornstars.

Pontifical High Mass and Ben Dover.

But watching experts perform beautifully gets boring in the end. We want to muck in.

Muck being the operative word.

So along come people like John Wesley or Oral Roberts and- er- here the analogy probably breaks down- and they get the congregation to join in- singing hymns, speaking in tongues.

And it looks silly.

Thanks.

ha ha ha ha so true!!!

Can't stop the urge to want to muck in. Or the urge to watch/participate from the sidelines in beautifully preformed dramatic ritual.

Which is why I'm forever in between the bondfire and the temple :)

that would be "bonfire" of course (but "bondfire" is kind of a cool word, and an apt description too :)

If you hadn't told me I'd have assumed a bondfire was some really cool ritual thing I hadn't come across yet- something really esoteric.

Ah, but when it's done right, nobody cares how silly it looks.

Just so long as you're one of those doing the doing.

Call me silly (Wesleyan). I like the simplicity of it all, almost no rules or ritual. One simple act of faith is all. Without the singing there would be no point in attending. When I was a young Roman Catholic, there was no singing during the long, painful Mass, and no praying aloud, either. Hence the appeal of the Protestants to a 13 year old girl.
As for sex, well, which amateur would be willing to leave it only to the pros? Not I, (said the little red hen).
Silliness rules!

Silliness rules.

Oh yes, I couldn't agree more. Dignity is greatly over-rated. :)
