Today my in-laws celebrate 60 years of marriage. Well done them!

Ailz took it upon herself to alert the Queen. Owing to one thing and another- mainly ill-health- the letter only went in the post this Monday. We assumed we'd blown it and the latter of congratulations from the Palace would be late. Not a bit of it. My ma-in-law just rang to announce that the postman had arrived a little before eight.  "Sorry to get you up so early," he said, "but it's from the Queen!" Well done, her!

Congratulations to your in-laws. I'm glad the letter arrived in time.

My grandparents also made it to their diamond wedding anniversary and got the telegram from the Queen. (In those days it was an actual telegram.)

60 years is a huge milestone. All good wishes for many more! I love it that you can get a congratulatory letter form the Queen.

I believe these days it's a card. I'll see it later today.

It's a remarkable achievement.

I rather think the secret of their success is that they play-fight all the time.

When my parents had their 50th (nearly two decades ago), I got them a card from the President and his wife, who were at the time George and Barbara Bush. Even though I had not voted for GB, I was pretty sure my parents had, but also that they would be tickled to get a greeting from whoever was in office. I read the card out loud to them at their huge party, prefacing it with "Wow, Mom and Dad, I didn't realize that you were such good friends with this couple!" It was fun. If they make it to 70 years (only a year and a half to go, with dementia gathering steam steadily), I'll enjoy getting them a card from Barack and Michelle.

Oh, cool. I thought it was just centenarians who got the royal letterhead; having a letter to share on an anniversary is lovely. The aged Japanese get silver sake cups (slightly shrunken this year).

My grandparents had three quarters of a century together; may your in-laws celebrate many more years of happiness.

This is basically what kings and queens and presidents are good for, I think. If only all their actions were as benign!

Three quarters of a century- that's truly amazing!

I want one of those saki cups; they're charming.
