this was brought up on the Moral Maze (BBC Radio 4) last night, regarding a discussion on what it the true meaning of Christmas in the somewhat secular society... though there were no Pagans there giving evidence, there were some interesting thoughts hared.. especially about the role of Christianity as revolution, and that Christmas should be seen as the fuse!

I will pass this on, if that's okay...xxx

Please do. The more people who know about it the better. :)

There is a video on the official St Nicolas web site.

Honestly, what were these security guards thinking? :(

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't particularly blame the guards. They were under orders and afraid of losing their jobs. I blame a government that not only locks up innocent kids but farms out the dirty work to a company that's prepared to do it for a profit.

Thanks for the link.

Well, In my youth I worked for a few years in the Civil Service, the most hierarchical organisation you can imagine, and the correct procedure when faced with something you have no authority to deal with is to pass the buck up to your superior.

The guards should have realised that they were out of their depth and they should have called on their boss to come out and deal with the funny guys in the robes.

But I do agree with you that this sort of thing shouldn't be farmed out to companies trying to make a profit out of it.

though I am not a Christian, but not allowing those gift to be given, and indeed the imprisonment of children is utterly disgraceful.

If you look at the heart of the Christmas myth there's something highly revolutionary going on. "I shall put down the mighty from their seats and exalt the humble and meek." Herod didn't kill all those babies on a whim....

That is disgusting. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Do you think with all the bad publicity, Yarl's Wood would reconsider?

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2009-12-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think government might reconsider. There's an election looming. They don't want to look inhumane.

Good, go get 'em!

Yikes! What is going on in the world today? Children imprisoned? Denied Holiday gifts? God help us all!

It's the logical outcome of a punitive approach to immigration.
