A Very Wet Weekend Break. II

After the white-knuckle experience of cruising through the flooded Dales we ditched our plans for a scenic journey home and decided to spend time in Newcastle instead. First we went to have a look at the cathedral and castle, then we crossed the river and spent two or three hours at the Baltic. We saw three exhibitions- Kim Soojas video installations- where she stands very still and lets the world flow past her- Damien Hirst's famous Pharmacy- which left me cold- and Parrsworld- Martin Parr's fascinating collection of photographs and ephemera (cases full of watches with Saddam's face on the dial) coupled with his own photographs of very rich people at play.

Then we came home down the A1.

That first picture would be called "Virgen de la leche" here in Spain (Virgin Mary of the Milk). There are some wonderful paintings with that same theme. You got a really good photo of it.

I have some medieval stained glass pictures to post also. They're from the Augsburg, Germany Dom (Cathedral).

I got lucky. I've never taken a good photo of stained glass before. This is the only piece of medieval glass left in the cathedral.

I look forward to the Augsburg glass.

You were smart to put up for the night under those conditions. Sometimes you just have to "not drive".
The pictures are, as always, wonderful, especially the stained glass.

The drive up was scary- and the conditions were so rough it wouldn't have made sense to go sightseeing in the back of beyond.

Thanks, I'm particularly proud of that picture. I've often tried to photograph stained glass- and this is the first time I've liked the result.

I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a curved bridge before. This one is beautiful, and is art, I guess, since surely it cost much more to bend it rather than make it the shortest distance between two points.

The roadway lifts up to let the big ships through- like the blinking- in slow motion- of an eyelid.
