Sharapova

I have nothing against Maria Sharapova; I just don't see what all the fuss is about. Go out on any high street and you'll clock hundreds of prettier, more interesting-looking girls- Sharapova's current opponent Gisela Dulko for instance- who is also- on this showing- a better player. What is it about Sharapova's brand of generic, Slavic poutiness that makes people lose all sense of proportion? Yes, her hair's yellow- so what?

I felt the same way about Anna Kournikova when everyone was in a tizzy about her.

Sharapova, Kournikova, whoever. Slavic goddesses leave me cold.

I'm a Williams fan.

Soooo....you are NOT one of those gentlemen who prefer blondes?

No, never have been. I'm not against blondes, but I don't privilege them on account of their hair colour. :)

What on earth does a person's looks have to do with their athletic skill? I have never understood the fuss people make over athletes for their looks. Why can't the media just report on whether or not she's got game on a given day?

I'm a Williams fan, too. Venus is my favorite, probably because I am the eldest between my sister and me, and people constantly compared us to one another when we were growing up. As soon as people began comparing Venus and Serena, my heart became set on Venus.

Both of those ladies have class, though. I admire them for that.

I favour Venus too. Mainly because she was the first to appear over here- and the first to win Wimbledon- and so we got to know her before we got to know her sister. But they're both remarkable.

Exactly.

The Sharapova-Dulko match (I blogged halfway through it) turned out to be a real thriller. Dulko dominated the first set, lost her way in the second- and the third was a nail-biter, with a succession of hotly contested match points. Dulko won, but Sharapova really made her fight for it.

I don't have much opportunity to notice how they look -- when I hear their asinine braying on the tennis court I switch channels.

I don't know why they do that. It's ugly.
